The Virgin Islands Republican Party mourns the passing of one of our most beloved members Arnold Mortimer Golden. Morty was a guiding light in our party over many years as an active member of our Territorial Committee. We cannot forget that when he would speak, on a topic and give us advice, how everyone listened intently. He lived a productive life as a man dedicated to unselfish public service, not only to the Territory as a government official and a legislator, but also in service to our country in the Korean War. In recent years as a member of the 5th Virgin Islands Constitutional Convention, his insistence that the Virgin Islands have true municipal government stands out as one of Morty’s great gifts he left as his legacy. Morty taught us that people are better off when they have towns and villages with an organized structure to bring them together at the local level.
Morty knew so well about what works in solving the many problems of our government structure. There could be no greater tribute in his memory than to have someday the creation of towns and town councils in the Virgin Islands. Morty’s determination over the years to remind us of a better way to deal with so many community issues, whether on talk shows were he was a frequent guest, but also in private and group conversations. His gifts of wisdom and knowledge of Virgin Island history will always be remembered.
