As the presidential race continues, Ron Paul takes time to chat with Doug Wead. “If we have learned anything in this cycle it is that the whole campaign can change quickly,” says the upbeat candidate, who refuses to back off his signature credo that it’s time to “stop policing the world and start defending this country.”

Doug Wead is a presidential historian, New York Times bestselling author and advisor to two presidents. He served as special assistant to the president in the George Herbert Walker Bush White House. He served in the George W Bush White House. In 1979 he co-founded Mercy Corps and the International Charity Awards. Doug is currently a senior advisor to Ron Paul.

As the presidential race continues, how do you feel about your campaign?

I feel good. I feel optimistic about America and especially hopeful about the next generation. As you know we have a lot of young people in our campaign and they are well informed and aware of the financial danger in this country. That bodes well for all of us. If we know the problem and do the right thing, we can eventually get out of this. So I am very encouraged by that.

Yes, but are you going to win the nomination? What do you say to those who believe you can’t win?

We can still win. It hasn’t been decided. And if we have learned anything in this cycle it is that the whole race can change quickly. I think we are going to do very well. We had a three way tie for delegates in Iowa. The important thing is that I have challenged the status quo, the corruption in Washington, and as a doctor I know that the patient, in this case the country, is responding and now has a good chance of recovery. This is very, very pleasing to me.

The attacks on you have been pretty bitter. Does that rankle?

Well, sure I am human. But if I am attacked for something I believe it doesn’t bother me. That’s why I make sure my own advertising is based on truth, comparison advertising, pointing out the differences on positions and issues. We are very careful not to say something about someone else that isn’t true.

There is one very serious charge going unanswered. Bachman said it daily and now Gingrich is saying it every day at every stop. He says, “Ron Paul would wait until an American city is destroyed by a nuclear weapon before he would respond.”

Oh, that is totally false. And further it is an insult to people’s intelligence. Of course, we would defend ourselves. We would never let it get to that point.

The fact is that to remain strong we must stop policing the world and start defending this country. The Soviet Union collapsed not because someone pointed a nuclear missile at them but because they over extended themselves.

Thomas Jefferson said that the more you use power the less you have.

I often say that we must stop policing the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan and start taking care of our own border with Mexico.

And yet your opponents, both on the campaign and in the media, portray this as an extreme view. They are especially concerned that you are not tough enough on Iran.

Well, I make it clear that I don’t want Iran to have nuclear weapons. Frankly, I don’t want North Korea to have them either. But neither do I want a needless war. We cannot afford to go to war without a clear reason and a clear threat or else these endless wars become, themselves, the source of our own defeat. I notice that the Israeli Chief of Mossad, Tamir Pardo, addressed a meeting of Israeli ambassadors in Jerusalem just a few days ago saying that Israel’s existence is not inevitably endangered by Iran acquiring an atomic weapon. Surely, we should consider what the Israelis themselves say.

How do you feel about being such a target? You are called a pacifist or an isolationist.

Just keep in mind, when we take the stage at the next debate I will have more donors among the active military service than all of the other candidates combined. Among my supporters is Michael Scheuer, the man who headed up the CIA’s Bin Laden Unit.

People, who understand the cost of war, are much more careful about rushing into it. And while all of the candidates talk big about wanting to have another war, only two of us, Rick Perry and myself, have been in uniform. The others are quick to send young people to die but they all carefully avoided military service themselves. (With the departure of Rick Perry, Ron Paul is the only candidate to have served his country in the military.)

And yet they say you are “dangerous.”

There is nothing dangerous about the U.S. Constitution. There is nothing dangerous about taking the issue of war or peace to the Congress and letting them debate it. If Congress has lost that power to decide war, then what are they for? What is more important than that? It means we will have replaced Congress with televisions pundits.

We should not so casually abandon the U.S. Constitution. It is a great document that has guided our country for two hundred years.

**NOTE** Congressman Ron Paul will travel to St Thomas and St Croix during the first week of March.

On Saturday March 10th, registered Republicans across the Virgin Islands will attend caucuses in each district to elect delegates to the 2012 National Convention in Tampa, Florida.

I made a declaration of my candidacy on January 5th 2012.

I live on a small farm in Estate La Grange in Frederiksted on Saint Croix, where I am an ancestral native of the Virgin Islands. I retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after 38 years in the United States Marine Corps. I am a former Xerox Corporation Executive where I specialized in Supply Chain Logistics and Information Systems. I am a former Senior Faculty member of Harvard Business School, where I also earned my MBA. I am currently the CEO of Inner Circle Logistics, Inc., an EDC beneficiary company on Saint Croix. I have been serving our community as a member of the St. Patrick’s Alumni Board, with the STX Marine Corps Association, and with the Boards of the Society of Caribbean Artists (SOCA) and Crucian Heritage, Nature and Tourism (CHANT).

Politically, I am a member of the Saint Croix Republicans and attended the 2008 Republican National Convention, held during August in St. Paul, Minnesota as an elected delegate of our Territory. I sincerely feel that I represent the values and philosophy of the Republican Party. Prior to returning to the Virgin Islands in 2005, I was active in New York politics and ran for the U.S. Congress in 1992 and 1994. Locally, I have participated in developing a core, common and unique platform for the Territory.

With your support, I will continue to fight for enhanced rights for the territories, and will ensure that our voices are heard on the floor of the Republican National Convention.

I urge you to vote for me, Johann (John) A. Clendenin as a pledged delegate for Mitt Romney to the Republican National Convention. A vote for me will ensure that the Virgin Island’s has a strong and experienced local voice in the halls of the Republican National Convention.

As Republicans in the Virgin Islands we have a unique opportunity to participate in both the platform formulation process and for participating in the selection of a nominee for the Presidency. What you do on March 10th is important to this process… and makes a difference! I appreciate your support.

You can reach me in the following ways:

January 5, 2012 by Karl Rove

A Big Win for Romney in Iowa
The former governor of Massachusetts is now a heavy favorite for the nomination.

Not long ago few thought Mitt Romney could win both the very conservative Iowa caucuses and then the quirky, slightly contrarian New Hampshire primary. If he did, most assumed he would have a lock on the Republican nomination. For understandable reasons: No other GOP presidential candidate in an open race has achieved back-to-back victories in these first two contests.

By this time next week, we’ll know if Mr. Romney is 2-0. If so, he becomes the prohibitive favorite.

The other big Iowa winner is former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum. Iowa does winnow the field (as it did with Wednesday’s departure of Congresswoman Michele Bachmann). But it also gives unheralded contenders like Mr. Santorum a chance to jump into the spotlight. And in spectacular fashion, he did. He essentially tied the GOP front-runner, leap-frogging the governor of the second-largest state (Rick Perry) and the former speaker of the House (Newt Gingrich).

Mr. Santorum shouldn’t kid himself; he faces huge obstacles. He’s spent a year making Iowa his second home. Now he’s in less friendly, less familiar terrain. He hasn’t had to endure withering scrutiny but will shortly. His chief opponent has tremendous organizational and financial advantages and has been through the rigors of a presidential primary race. Still, Mr. Santorum has a shot, and that’s all he could have hoped for.

Looking ahead, he has to hope New Hampshire pays attention to what happens in Iowa (it traditionally hasn’t) and that he can rapidly cobble together money, organization and a message to compete in January’s primaries in South Carolina and Florida, as well as the Granite State. Until yesterday, Mr. Santorum hadn’t been in New Hampshire in a month, South Carolina for two, and Florida hardly at all.

Because he has a high floor of support but also a very low ceiling, Texas Congressman Ron Paul is likely to have seen his high-water mark Tuesday. The results provided him little that helps him broaden his support in New Hampshire and subsequent primaries. His manager admitted as much by saying they would focus on caucuses rather than the more numerous primaries, a strategy guaranteed to marginalize Mr. Paul as a candidate and maximize his convention influence.

Despite a deeply disappointing fourth-place finish, Mr. Gingrich—who only a month ago held a double digit lead in Iowa—will go on, driven in part by his obvious bitterness toward Mr. Romney. This puts him dangerously close to looking “enraged, wearing a full hockey mask and carrying a chainsaw,” as one Washington observer put it. Mr. Gingrich can recover, but only if he returns to what made him the front-runner a month ago: coming off as the best-informed debater and offering a wide-ranging vision.

Mr. Perry says he’ll continue and focus on South Carolina. But if spending $5.5 million in Iowa on television (roughly $430 a vote) didn’t work, the $3 million or $4 million he has left in his war chest may not change his fortunes down South. At least it gives him the right to try.

This leaves Mr. Romney facing a two-front war: one in New Hampshire against Messrs. Santorum, Gingrich, Paul and former Amb. Jon Huntsman, and a second one in South Carolina against Messrs. Santorum, Gingrich, Paul and Perry. His deep organization and large treasury are critical to weathering assaults from these gentlemen.

The former Massachusetts governor should prepare to be the piñata at Saturday’s debate in Manchester, N.H. It won’t be pleasant, but he can solidify his lead if he deflects the attacks in a dignified, confident manner and avoids looking irritated or rattled. As in earlier debates, better to look amused rather than annoyed. Wherever possible, Mr. Romney should focus his fire on substantive disagreements with Mr. Obama while demonstrating his readiness to embrace bold reform (as he did in his entitlement reform speech endorsing the thrust of Rep. Paul Ryan’s budget). Easier said than done.

If a year ago you said that Mitt Romney would win Iowa, be heading to New Hampshire with a large lead, and his chief opponent would be a former senator who lost his re-election race in a swing state by 18 points, you would have had to believe Mr. Romney would be on his way to winning the GOP nomination. And you know what? Now we’ll see if it plays out that way.

Vince Danet sent me his reasons for running so I have posted them as received.

Herb

Dear VI Republican (name withheld)

Thanks for your phone call yesterday and your expression of interest about my intent to create a Vince Danet for Congress Exploratory Committee. I have strong feelings that the debates, primary and caucus process that the GOP is currently running up to is crucial to not only getting our message out but to letting people know the the GOP is really a big tent of very capable leaders.

Accordingly, I believe it would be very educational and healthy to have a challenge on our side of the political spectrum here in the Virgin Islands. Our voters need to see this exchange. They need to know that Republicans are really committed to problem solving not just the stereotypical establishment rich white male club. We must change that imagine and be proud of the strength of our diversity and leadership .

Despite my loss; my run against Delegate Donna in 2010 showed me that she is vulnerable and I believe that you see that weakness also. She is depending on the fact that Virgin islanders vote overwhelmingly Democrat… that’s all, there is absolutely zero substance. I’m not going to let the lack of funding be an obstacle. We MUST keep the pressure on. Virgin Islanders deserve better. We deserve representation that will lead from the front and not treat the office as some sort of ceremonial center for press releases with no tangible action. There is no excuse for the lack of any sort of engagement by the current delegate in the current poor state of affairs of politics in our territory.

I hope to even start the discussion on local talks show to discuss the pros and cons of the prospect of a Republican primary in the US Virgin Islands and the implications it would have versus “politics as usual” here in the VI. It’s time to change the course of political discourse and action. The people have lost faith in the current crop of politicians at all levels… we need bring integrity back to elective office and the electoral process; Let’s give it back to them. Most Virgin Islanders are hard working and self-reliant… not looking for government hand-outs, THAT is the very essence of being Republican. Let’s show that to the people. We may actually recruit good people to our side in the process.

Virgin Islanders need to know that there’s a move afoot to bring honest, forthright, public-focused, non-self-serving candidates into public office that are willing to do what’s right for our territory.

The VI Republican Party needs a shot in the arm and I think a primary is great idea! Let’s do this… for the Virgin Islands. Let me know.

Warm regards,

Vince Danet

Obama’s Political Stimulus Plan
His caricature of the GOP’s alternative isn’t credible with voters.

After bipartisan Senate opposition stymied President Obama’s latest $447 billion attempt to jump-start the economy, he could have led serious negotiations with congressional Republicans and Democrats over measures for job creation. Instead he hit the campaign trail, claiming on this week’s bus tour that the GOP economic plan is: “Let’s have dirtier air, dirtier water, less people with health insurance.”

This angry, partisan approach hasn’t worked well this year and may have helped deepen the decline in the president’s approval ratings. Ironically, the president’s re-election hopes and the country’s economy would both be strengthened if he understood the reason for opposition to his new stimulus: Unemployment went up after his first stimulus. His lavish pledges of growth and jobs didn’t pan out, leaving the program widely (and rightly) seen as a failure. A Sept. 1 ABC/Washington Post poll found that 47% believe Mr. Obama’s economic program has had no real effect while 34% said it made the economy worse.

For many Americans, another stimulus looks like more reckless and wasteful spending.

Temporary measures like those in Mr. Obama’s Stimulus II won’t encourage long-term growth. Its biggest outlay—$175 billion—was a one-year extension of the 2% reduction in the Social Security payroll tax. Besides undermining the retirement program’s solvency, it has failed to ignite economic growth since it went into effect last December. People are using their savings to pay down debt, not to invest. It is, after all, a tax holiday—and holidays pass quickly.

Mr. Obama also continues insisting on $35 billion to “put teachers back in the classroom” and “make certain we’re not laying off police officers and firefighters.” But his own National Center for Educational Statistics forecasts that the number of teachers will rise anyway—from 3.66 million this fall to 3.7 million in the fall of 2012, and to 3.75 million in the fall of 2013.

While some communities may face police and fire layoffs, there is no evidence of a massive wave of firings of first responders. Could this $35 billion be a payoff to state and local public-employee unions? Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid seemed to imply this was the case with his curious statement Tuesday that “It’s very clear that private sector jobs have been doing just fine.” No wonder even Democratic senators like Arkansas’s Mark Pryor and Montana’s Jon Tester are questioning the president’s provision.

Meanwhile, the president is pressing for a one-time, $50 billion expenditure on transportation. Why doesn’t Mr. Obama instead get the highway bill reauthorized for its normal six-year term? It lapsed in 2009 while big Democratic majorities in both houses of Congress did nothing, and it has since been funded year-to-year. Experts and state officials say this is an inefficient and unworkable approach to improvement of the infrastructure.

The president’s proposed new stimulus is also accompanied by $1.5 trillion in new taxes (for example by letting Bush-era tax rates for wealthy earners lapse, and by placing new limits on their deductions)—though he said in August 2009 that “The last thing you want to do is raise taxes in the middle of a recession.” For once he was right. Even Nebraska’s Democratic Sen. Ben Nelson complained, saying “I don’t think you increase taxes for new spending.” Permanent tax increases simply enable Washington to keep spending at record levels.

The president is increasingly at odds with members of his own party, especially those up for re-election in 2012, like West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin. Voters see what Mr. Obama, the most rigidly ideological modern president, cannot: It’s time to limit government’s size, scope and reach.

Voters are demanding growth and jobs. Mr. Obama, by contrast, seems most intent on transforming America to fit his liberal worldview. But we can’t have growth and jobs if the priority is to transform the country into a European-style social democracy.

Back in 2010, Mr. Obama told ABC’s Diane Sawyer, “I’d rather be a really good one-term president than a mediocre two-term president.” The outcome he didn’t mention is that he could turn out to be a really bad one-term president.

Herman Cain Bio:

■Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics.

■Master’s degree in Computer Science.

■Mathematician for the Navy, where he worked on missile ballistics (making him a rocket scientist).

■Computer systems analyst for Coca-Cola.

■VP of Corporate Data Systems and Services for Pillsbury (this is the top of the ladder in the computer world, being in charge of information systems for a major corporation). All achieved before reaching the age of 35. Since he reached the top of the information systems world, he changed careers!

■ Business Manager. Took charge of Pillsbury’s 400 Burger King restaurants in the Philadelphia area, which were the company’s poorest performers in the country. Spent the first nine months learning the business from the ground up, cooking hamburger and yes, cleaning toilets. After three years he had turned them into the company’s best performers.

■Godfather’s Pizza CEO. Was asked by Pillsbury to take charge of their Godfather’s Pizza chain (which was on the verge of bankruptcy). He made it profitable in 14 months.

■In 1988 he led a buyout of the Godfather’s Pizza chain from Pillsbury. He was now the owner of a restaurant chain. Again he reached the top of the ladder of another industry.

■He was also chairman of the National Restaurant Association during this time. This is a group that interacts with government on behalf of the restaurant industry, and it gave him political experience from the non-politician side. Having reached the top of a second industry, he changed careers again!

■Adviser to the Federal Reserve System. Herman Cain went to work for the Federal Reserve Banking System advising them on how monetary policy changes would affect American businesses.

■Chairman of the Kansas City Federal Reserve Bank. He worked his way up to the chairmanship of a regional Federal Reserve bank. This is only one step below the chairmanship of the entire Federal Reserve System (the top banking position in the country). This position allowed him to see how monetary policy is made from the inside, and understand the political forces that impact the monetary system. After reaching the top of the banking industry, he changed careers for a fourth time!

■Writer and public speaker. He then started to write and speak on leadership. His books include Speak as a Leader, CEO of Self, Leadership is Common Sense, and They Think You’re Stupid.

■Radio Host. Around 2007—after a remarkable 40 year career—he started hosting a radio show on WSB in Atlanta (the largest talk radio station in the country). He did all this starting from rock bottom (his father was a chauffeur and his mother was a maid). When you add up his accomplishments in his life—including reaching the top of three unrelated industries: information systems, business management, and banking—Herman Cain may have the most impressive resume of anyone that has run for the presidency in the last half century.

Married 43 years….

Three significant historical events have been eclipsed by Obama: 1) Jimmy Carter will no longer be looked upon as the worst president in American history; 2) Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton will no longer be recognized as the greatest liars in presidential history; 3) Clinton’s stain on Monica’s dress, and what that did to the White House in general and the office of the president specifically, will forever pale in comparison to the stain and stench of Obama.

I need not spend much time on the failure of Obama as president. His tenure has been a failure on every measurable level. So much so, in fact, that some of the staunchest, most respected liberal Democrats and Democratic supporters have not only openly criticized him – some even more harshly than this essayist – but they have called for him to step down.

Richard Nixon’s words “I am not a crook,” punctuated with his involvement in Watergate, and Bill Clinton’s finger-wagging as he told one of the most pathetic lies in presidential history, in the aftermath of Obama, will be viewed as mere prevarications.

Mr. Nixon and Clinton lied to save their backsides. Although, I would argue there are no plausible explanations for doing what they did, I could entertain arguments pursuant to understanding their rationales for lying. But in the case of Obama, he lies because he is a liar. He doesn’t only lie to cover his misdeeds – he lies to get his way. He lies to belittle others and to make himself look presentable at their expense. He lies about his faith, his associations, his mother, his father and his wife. He lies and bullies to keep his background secret. His lying is congenital and compounded by socio-psychological factors of his life.

Never in my life, inside or outside of politics, have I witnessed such dishonesty in a political leader. He is the most mendacious political figure I have ever witnessed. Even by the low standards of his presidential predecessors, his narcissistic, contumacious arrogance is unequalled. Using Obama as the bar, Nero would have to be elevated to sainthood.

As the stock markets were crashing, taking with them the remaining life saving of untold tens of thousands, Obama was hosting his own birthday celebration, which was an event of epicurean splendidness. The shamelessness of the event was that it was not a state dinner to welcome foreign dignitaries, nor was it to honor an American accomplishment – it was to honor the Pharaoh, Barack Hussein Obama. The event’s sole purpose was for the Pharaoh to have his loyal subjects swill wine, indulge in gluttony and behavior unfit to take place on the property of taxpayers, as they suffer. It was of a magnitude comparable to that of Tyco CEO Dennis Kozlowski’s $2 million birthday extravaganza for its pure lack of respect for the people.

Permit me to digress momentarily. The U.S. Capitol and the White House were built with the intent of bringing awe and respect to America and her people. They were also built with the intent of being the greatest of equalizers. I can tell you, having personally been to both, there is a moment of awe and humility associated with being in the presence of the history of those buildings. They are to be honored and inscribed into our national psyche, not treated as a Saturday night house party at Chicago’s Cabrini-Green.

The people of America own that home Obama and his wife continue to debase with their pan-ghetto behavior. It is clear that Obama and family view themselves as royalty, but they’re not. They are employees of “we the people,” who are suffering because of his failed policies. What message does this behavior send to those who today are suffering as never before?

What message does it send to all Americans who are struggling? Has anyone stopped to think what the stock market downturn forebodes for those 80 million baby boomers who will be retiring in the next period of years? Is there a snowball’s chance in the Sahara that every news program on the air would applaud this behavior if it were George W. Bush? To that point, do you remember the media thrashing Bush took for having a barbecue at the White House?

Like Nero – who was only slightly less debaucherous than Caligula – with wine on his lips Obama treated “we the people” the way Caligula treated those over whom he lorded.

Many in America wanted to be proud when the first person of color was elected president, but instead, they have been witness to a congenital liar, a woman who has been ashamed of America her entire life, failed policies, intimidation and a commonality hitherto not witnessed in political leaders. He and his wife view their life at our expense as an entitlement – while America’s people go homeless, hungry and unemployed.
